Greetings, dear friends. Today we’ll talk about how to become a writer and where to start. I myself know how difficult it is to take the first steps without falling into a quagmire of doubt. In this article, I have put together the most practical tips. Using them, you will achieve success faster than expected.

Where to get inspiration

Many novice writers complain about the same thing: they put a blank sheet of paper in front of them and ... gnaw at a pencil for hours - "And what to write about?"

Inspiration does not arise out of nothing. It always needs to be "fed." And, thank God, there is plenty of food: a book read, a movie seen, a conversation heard ... By the way, Dostoevsky drew inspiration from the crime chronicle, Tolstoy from salon gossip.

Nowadays it’s even easier: just turn on the TV, go on the Net or go on public transport to “fetch” a topic for thought.

Focus of attention

Having noticed something entertaining, do not rely only on a good memory. Carry a notebook and pen. Many authors belatedly annoy: having brought their inspired fingers over the keyboard, they realize that important details are missing or simply not remembered.

Always be fully equipped. Imagine a hunter who discovered a long-awaited prey: he sees a target right in front of him, his hand is already reaching for his back to quickly grab his weapon and ... it turns out that he left his bow and arrows at home.

You can record anything you like: random conflict, unexpected phrases, vivid characters ... The ability to notice details will become a very useful writing habit.

Instead of notepad, you can use the phone and take notes there.

Practice and practice again

Can you imagine a way to build muscle with just one effort of will? Are you smiling? Do it right. It is clear that a figure is made with dumbbells in their hands, applying specific efforts.

So it is here. Just lying on the couch and dreaming of an unborn book is impossible. To become a writer - you need to start writing. Truth is as old as the world, but still valid.

Make a habit of writing every day at least an hour or two. Even if the head does not yet have a finished plot. Just describe what seemed interesting over the past day. Very often, such small notes become an inexhaustible source for full stories.

A bit about the complexes

Surely you have heard many times that only an extremely competent person can become a writer. Do you agree with this opinion?

“Well, how will everyone see my mistakes? - the aspiring writer thinks, “No, I’d better read the textbooks on grammar, stylistics and punctuation first, practice the exercises, work out with a tutor, get a bachelor’s degree in philology ...”

Learning to write correctly, of course, is necessary. Even skilled and scorched writers learn. Learn all my life! Since there is no limit to perfection.

The fastest way to learn how to express thoughts correctly is to write them. And when there is a doubt where to put a comma, today many directories and online free services are at your service. You can, in the end, turn to the editors (but this is no longer free, of course). There is also always at your service a site for finding freelancers, where you can find a corrector at a reasonable price.

Get a special notebook, write down your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them the next time. A little patience - and literacy will become your integral quality.

And read, of course. Read the texts of those who already own the skill of eloquence. You will be surprised how soon your own speech becomes rich, multifaceted and correct.

Do I need to reinvent the wheel

The first story or book rarely succeeds immediately if there is no one to support and direct enthusiasm in the right direction. In the absence of sufficient experience and skill, young authors first begin to write, then they realize that they did not take it into account in advance, rewrite huge chunks and even drop everything halfway.

Ready methods, polished by experienced teachers and tested in practice, help to step over such torment. They become a compass that will not let you go astray. There is nothing incomprehensible and complicated in the process of creating a book. Follow the patterns - and go! Only heels (sorry, handles) sparkle on the path to success.

In my courses “How to Quickly Write a Book”, in just one seminar, all the wisdom of planning and stage-by-stage creation of a work of any volume is chewed. (See more details here).

What else can confuse on the way to glory

When a story or a book has already been written, the author begins to torment new doubts: how to attract the attention of the public and where to send the work so that they do not gather dust for years.

Any author can quickly become famous. In addition to the classic version with publishers, you can participate in literary contests or publish on blogs.

Online projects are good because they allow you to quickly track the reverse readership. A novice writer does not need to languish for months with obscurity in order to hear an opinion about his work.

Important tip

Do not be afraid of criticism. The fear of public discussion fetters a novice author, forcing him to write on a table. Feel free to go "to the people." Only in this way can you become famous today. Or are you waiting for the descendants to unearth the manuscripts of an unrecognized genius? 🙂

Chat with your readers. You will quickly understand what qualities, as a writer, you should improve. It is clear that not all criticisms are justified. But some of them can become an invaluable kick to excellence.

One should not be afraid of criticism, but of baseless flattery, which lulls vigilance and the desire to develop.

To summarize

Writing skills are a combination of certain skills that can be fully mastered by observing others, constantly practicing writing, and improving one's speech. And of course, it doesn’t hurt to master the technique of quickly building works.

Each of these items will definitely be considered on this blog more deeply. Subscribe to our newsletter not to miss interesting discussions.

The first step to becoming a writer

It’s like with the fees on a long trip.

Imagine: you decided to go to the jungle, to an unknown, but beautiful and mystical lake, which you heard a lot about. You collect everything you need for the trip, find a guide, get out the cards and ... stay in the camp to master everything properly before setting off on the road.
This, of course, is necessary, but it is important to remember: you can study the maps of the chosen path for a long time - anticipate dangers, look for possible traps, lay the best route to the mysterious lake ...

But actually until you move, nothing will happen. You won’t come anywhere.

Therefore, sometimes you just need to close your eyes and step.

And finally get to the lake.

Les Brown, a popular American motivational speaker, once gave excellent advice: “Take a jump, and your wings will grow in flight”. For a creative person, this is especially important.

You can object: how to jump when it is so scary?

Indeed, sometimes we stomp on the spot, find some urgent and important matters, which take all the time, and - do not write. We are engaged in self-development, attend courses and seminars - and do not write. Sometimes we take time specifically to sit down for a book and finally write the first paragraphs, but ... we’re reaching for checking mail, making calls, and watching news. We spend all day at the computer - and do not write.

The reason for this can really be fears that paralyze our creative will.

Let's see what fears a novice writer can torment.

Fear of Writing Failure

I'm sure many beginning authors are familiar with these thoughts:

  • "Nothing works, I can’t finish the book,"
  • "Everything has already been said, I will not write anything new,"
  • “It’s going to be terrible,”
  • "No one will read what I write."
  • “Those who read will not like it,”
  • "I will write complete nonsense and I will look solid."

I think you yourself can continue the list. Such fears have one root - the fear of failure.

Such fear gives rise to one of the most powerful creative stupor - blocks that interfere with free and easy writing. The fear of failure is so great that it’s easier not to try at all than to try and see that it failed. And the novice writer begins to search for “magic”: for example, that he can write only when there is nobody around ... or when he has inspiration, and the muse sits nearby, and nothing will come out without it ... or that he needs to prepare properly and first wait for the right mood ...

“Magic” is something that, as a beginner thinks, will allow you to immediately write perfect texts.

This is a dead end.

Firstly, because such “magic” does not exist, and the path to the development of writing is exactly the same as any other. This is a path of trial and error, success and failure, overcoming which you climb the stairs to the very top.

And secondly, because it creates the illusion of activity. The author seems to be doing something, constantly thinking about his unwritten stories, twirling them in his head, considering the possible development of the plot, but in reality nothing happens. Stories still remain only in the author’s fantasies. And so it can go on for many years.

How to cope with the fear of failure and start writing a book?

Allow it to yourself. This is the easiest way. Allow yourself to write a bad book. Give carte blanche to stupid and silly texts, to clumsy style, to cardboard heroes - let it all be with you.

And then real magic will happen - you will begin to write, and the texts you get will be DIFFERENT. Both bad and successful, and even those that are close to masterpieces. Then you will become a real writer.

The fear of failure is killed by the acceptance of this failure. As soon as you allow yourself to fail, you will shift the focus of attention from the result to the process, and this is a very important point. In order to write long and productively, it is important to get pleasure and joy from this process. Such an idea can be found among many successful writers.

Here are a few quotes:

E. Hemingway: “Suppose you started at 6 in the morning and worked before noon, or finished earlier. When you finish, you are so devastated, and at the same time, not devastated, but filled, as if making love to a loved one. ”

N.V. Gogol: "There is hardly the highest of pleasures, as the pleasure of creating."

J. Fowles: “To write is like eating or making love; it is a natural process, not an artificial one. As soon as you are a writer, write because you want to write, and not because you think you should do it. ”

If you feel resistance when you try to add words, combine phrases and build them one after another on paper, then you won’t write much. You will perceive writing as hard work that takes all your strength and kills the desire to create.

Creativity is a game. Try not to forget about it, even when writing a serious philosophical treatise. If you forbid yourself to play, you will kill your creativity.

Take your writing lesson more easily - allow yourself to be imperfect, ingenious, frivolous, allow yourself errors, absurdities in the text, focus your attention on the thoughts and images that you want to convey, and not on the words that you do.

The time for real work with words and style will come when you put the last point in the draft.

Fear of success

There is another side to writing concerns. Beginning authors may be tormented by thoughts of a different content:

  • "I am not worthy,"
  • “If they find out about me as a writer, they’ll make fun of me,”
  • “Even if I write a successful book, it will be an accident”,
  • "I can never repeat success,"
  • "I do not have enough strength to conform to the ideas of others about a successful person."

All this - paradoxical fear of success. He - just like the fear of failure - can block some areas of writing. For example, you may have difficulty completing stories. Or with sending manuscripts to the publisher - even after one or two successful publications.

Fear of not meeting someone’s expectations or perceptions leads the novice author to hide for a long time and hesitate to express himself to the general public (and in the modern world there are many opportunities to do this!). Or endlessly writes "to the table." Or refers to his books, exactly to pampering, that is, completely frivolous and unimportant occupation. Sooner or later, such a perception of one’s own creativity will negatively affect both writing and generally the ability to invent and write stories.

How to find courage for success?

Remember, in any development of the situation you do not assume any additional obligations. This is the most important thing that is important to understand and accept. Absolutely all readers are not obliged to please you. You do not have to live up to someone else's expectations. You don’t even have to write a second book if you don’t want to!

Try to perceive success - great or small - as an added bonus to your ordinary life. As a gift from the universe, the universe, higher powers (as you please) - only and exclusively for your joy. A gift that looks like a warm sunny day just when you planned a long walk. Such a gift will not be eternal, but it will warm the heart and leave wonderful memories.

And perhaps then you will get another one.

If you learn to look at success in this way, then it will no longer scare you. This means that you will gain more confidence and courage to create.

The Importance of Support for a Writer

Of course, courage in the face of failure or success is not the only thing required to follow the path of a writer. There are many pitfalls waiting on this road, many other fears and fears. And they also need to be able to cope.

I will remind you of another form of courage, also very important, - the courage to go further, no matter what:

  • write a second story, a second novel, the next series of stories,
  • to overcome creative crises,
  • look for new ideas, although it seems that everything has already been written and told before us,
  • cope with criticism and take the best of your experience ...

Go ahead and claim your creativity

Two things will do best here. First, faith in yourself and in what you do. And secondly, support. Feedback from readers, help from colleagues and mentors, the benevolent interest of loved ones and friends in your work can work wonders.

remember, that the most important thing for a writer - as well as for any person who wants to become a professional - the courage to try again and again, despite failures and not feeling dizzy with success.

Where to study as a writer

It seems to many that you can become a writer just by really wanting it. Learn to be a writer? What stupidity, everything can be mastered independently. It is enough to read other people's books for an example.

Can you come home after visiting the exhibition of the famous artist, pick up brushes and paints and paint the same magnificent portrait or landscape? Of course not. Because painting is a form of art that has been taught for many years, so how does literature differ from it? The reason for the error is probably that each of us knows how to write. This is a required skill that is necessary for a person living in society.

Do not confuse the ability to write and express your thoughts in an orderly manner with writer's work. In the same way, you can compare inept scribbles in a school album with paintings by Aivazovsky or Repin.

There are a number of related specialties that will help students become writers in the future. For admission to such a faculty, it is mandatory to take the Russian language and literature. The most popular specialty is considered philology (modern, applied), although in some universities of the country there are faculties of journalism, dramaturgy, film drama and even faculties for the training of literary workers.

How to become a writer: books, manuals, useful literature

There are special publications on the book market that tell in detail about how to become a writer / writer, but there are not many of them. Publishers focus on children's benefits, which help develop literary talent in the child. At one time, a whole series for children was released by the publishing house "MIF" (Mann, Ivanov and Ferber).

Celebrities that have already taken place often talk about how they achieved success. For example, Stephen King, inspired by one evening, wrote 50 pages of a new book. This fact explains his fertility as an author. С подобными статьями можно ознакомиться в популярных журналах. Некоторые жизненные истории действительно оказывают на читателя вдохновляющий эффект. Есть и специальные ресурсы в интернете.Answers to many questions can be found on the site "Directory of the writer", which specializes in the education of uncouth authors and bringing them into a "divine form."

I want to become a writer: in search of inspiration

Plagiarism is one of the most painful problems for novice writers. Fantasy is a limitless world, but many ignore it, preferring to draw ideas from other people's creativity with complete handfuls. Such writers themselves do not notice how they become plagiarists. They steal thoughts, plots, characters and try to clothe them in a different form in order to pass off their book as a completely new work. This is the wrong approach. Nobody forces you to invent a bicycle again, but also to steal someone else's, repaint it and give it out as your own is a very bad idea.

You can draw inspiration from books. Even with the average reader, this happens: turn the last page, and the feeling of inner lift does not let go. You have been “living” in the world of books for some time, you do not want to leave it, and in order not to lose this connecting thread, you are ready to sit down at your desk yourself. This is a useful inspiration when a book by a talented writer pushes to literary exploits. “Harmful” inspiration is to rewrite someone else’s story, wanting to add your own conclusions.

To succeed in literature, young talented people will need patience, endurance, iron nerves and determination, the ability to move forward, sweeping away obstacles in their path.

Tips for Beginner Writers

How to become a writer in Russia? Unfortunately, this is a very difficult, and for some, completely impossible task. The Russian market is awash with publications by little-known authors, most of which are husks. Readers forget about these books right after they turn the last page. Having burnt themselves a couple of times, consumers cease to “take risks” and take books by unknown authors, preferring proven classics. Is it possible to survive in this terrible publishing world, where competition mercilessly crushes newcomers, and the finest hour may never come?

First you need to go down from heaven to earth, and we will helpfully substitute the stairs. Perhaps your book is really brilliant, but you need to really look at things:

  • Geniuses usually gained recognition after death.
  • Cinderella Stories is an exception, not a rule. You can count on the fingers the cases when little-known authors woke up famous after the pearl of their work was taken out of a pile of competitors' rubbish.

Be prepared for the fact that no one will immediately recognize you. Jack London was starving at the dawn of his career and even described this dramatic period of his life in Martin Eden. Howard Lovecraft was a petty journal writer until the end of his life and his chilling works were not interested in publishers. Franz Kafka was barely making ends meet simply because other genres of literature were in fashion in his time. He “did not fall into the trend” and did not want to follow the lead of literary fashion. Before his early death, the prosaic philosopher even asked his executor to destroy all literary works (probably the laurels of Nikolai Vasilievich did not give rest), but he refused (for which he should be thanked very much). Edgar Allan Poe, the famous mystic, the creator of the world's first detective, the author of the quirky poem about the Raven was starving and, having lost the support of his wife, could not get out of the depths of despair, filling his longing with alcohol.

These examples clearly demonstrate the cruelty of fate. Even geniuses do not always succeed the first time, so after giving up in no case do not give up. People say "and there will be a holiday on our street." If now it is dark and empty, then the time of triumph and parade with drums has simply not come yet.

If the book market swallowed your first work along with the cover and got lost in the stream of the same little-known publications, then do not dare to give up and put an end to this. The reader will be attracted not only by the beautiful picture and intriguing annotation, but also the advice to read from a famous writer. Even eminent pen masters have resorted to this advertising move.

For example, to bring Dean Kunz’s books to the Russian market, marketers “lured” readers with a loud annotation to the annotation “Dean Kunz’s books are afraid to read even Stephen King.” Made really smart. Direct speech is not used, so whether he said this is impossible to prove. The trick worked: readers flew into a better-known name like moths into the light of a night lamp. Another option to make your path easier is to create a work in collaboration with another writer. This adventure may end in failure if you get a "lazy genius" in your teammates awaiting recognition.

To publish your own book, you need to carefully study the domestic market and identify its needs for works of a particular literary genre, that is, the writer must adapt to the conditions for the publisher to buy the rights to his book. You will write “for the soul” later, when the name becomes known, and the publishing hunt begins for your talent. A writer must be a good businessman. Your book is an ordinary product, or rather not an ordinary one, but magnificent, intriguing, exciting and memorable. This is how you should present it in order to interest buyers in this product.
