Chestnuts are a popular nut for the holidays and can be quite expensive in stores. This is one of the easiest autumn harvest nuts if you can find chestnuts.

With a little effort, you can save money and enjoy these sweet pleasures in your favorite recipes.

How to collect chestnuts

Chestnuts are usually harvested from mid-September to November and are one of the easiest nut varieties to prepare for storage.

Pull a pair of work gloves and try.

  1. Wait for the chestnuts to fall to the ground.
  2. Collect all nuts with open burrs. (You will definitely need gloves for this job.)
  3. Remove the nuts from the burrs. Discard any worm holes or other signs of damage.
  4. Store chestnuts immediately in airtight containers and freeze or freeze.

Chestnuts in our country come to the shelves:

  • fresh frozen in a purified form,
  • pickled (canned).

Canned chestnuts can immediately be used without further processing for preparing salads or eating as an independent dish. Freshly frozen are first fried and then, for example, added to mushroom soup. Fresh must first be incised, covered with foil and sent to the oven for baking for 20 minutes. After the fruits are cooked, they can be salted and eat just like boiled corn.

How to choose and how to store chestnuts in different countries

In different parts of the world, chestnuts appear on tables in kind and cooked according to original recipes. They make mashed potatoes, side dishes for meat dishes, cook them and fry them. The fruits are widely used in the preparation of confectionery and many other dishes.

Italians love chestnuts soaked in wine. This is for them both an original dish and the ability to preserve the fruits longer. In France, you can try the famous "maron glace" - crushed in syrup and glazed chestnuts. And throughout the year in many countries, “pilong” chestnuts, which are dried fruits, are popular.

How to store chestnut nuts?

Keeping fresh for a long time is not recommended. So they quickly lose their beneficial properties and deteriorate. If you buy fresh fruits, then they should be heavy, dense, with a shiny shell. A good chestnut should have a mass of at least 22 g.

When purchasing freshly frozen or canned in the original packaging, look at the expiration date. Usually it is from 1 to 6 months.

Chestnuts ripen from October to December.

Keep them in a cool dark place. The room must be clean and dry.

  • Store correctly. The chestnuts in the shell will be stored in the refrigerator for a month or in the freezer for a year.
  • Listen to the rattle. The chestnuts that are in the shell can also dry out and shrink and crack. Experience the freshness of chestnuts by shaking them. If you hear rattling inside the sink, it may be too dry to eat.
  • Sorting chestnuts. When sorting chestnuts, look for smooth, glossy, and heavy shells. They will contain the most delicious nuts.

In a refrigerator

Shelf life of chestnuts in the refrigerator, subject to all conditions, is 2 months.

Since chestnuts contain large amounts of water, it is best to hide them in the refrigerator. The main condition is compliance with the temperature regime. In this way, you can save both peeled and non-peeled chestnuts.

The temperature should be 0 or -1 degrees. It is achieved using a temperature controller. On the lower shelves of the refrigerator, the temperature is always lower. That is why it is best to put the fruits exactly below.

To save the chestnuts in the refrigerator, they need to be wrapped in a plastic bag and make holes for ventilation. Otherwise, they will begin to mold.

If you fill the chestnuts with sand, they can lie from 5 to 7 months.

Raw, unpeeled nuts are stored very well in the sand. It is best to sprinkle the chestnuts with sand in wooden crates or barrels. Then place the containers in the basement and store at a temperature of +2 to +5 degrees.
