The authors of shutterstock, a popular resource among designers, suggest trying simple home printing technology. It is available to every owner of a laser printer. Or someone who is not too lazy to go to the nearest copy center and print the desired picture. This method will allow you to easily transfer the image to a fabric or wooden surface.
You will need:
• Acetone (or nail polish remover based on it),
• Cotton pads,
• plastic card,
• Scotch tape,
• T-shirt / fabric / wooden surface on which the pattern will be transferred,
• Desired image.
Step 1: print the image on a laser printer in a mirror version. An inkjet printer is a poor helper in this business. does not guarantee an even distribution of ink, which will be displayed on the final result. The darker the original image, the better.
Step 2: Lay the sheet face down on a fabric or wooden surface. It is advisable to fix it on one side with tape so that the picture "does not leave." Dampen a cotton pad or brush in acetone and carefully wipe the back of the pattern to make the paper wet.
Step 3: take a plastic card and use it like a scraper to go around the back of the picture. It's like rubbing it in. First, from bottom to top, then from top to bottom, repeat several times. Do not press the “scraper” so as not to tear the print. The main rule - all this time the paper with the image should be wet from acetone. So you help the drawing to clutch with fabric or wood.
Step 4: gently pull the edge of the sheet with the image and evaluate how the process of "printing". When the pattern is completely transferred, remove the paper.
Step 5: if you printed the image on a tree, cover it with a thin layer of varnish. If on a fabric - thoroughly dry it under a hot stream of air for 10-15 minutes so that the ink is better absorbed and does not disappear after the first wash.

We prepare everything for work
Before you start creating an artistic masterpiece, you need to prepare in advance everything that can come in handy in the process of work:
- blanks (any piece of wood that is planned to be beautiful and unique),
- soft pencil,
- sandpaper of various grain sizes,
- paper sheets (for those who work on sketches),
- a set of brushes of various thicknesses,
- templates (for those who do not know how to draw),
- transparent varnish (it is desirable to cover the finished pattern with varnish so that it is less damaged),
- container for liquids (for water or solvent, depending on the coloring matter).
The primer for wood is selected in accordance with the type of paint, but the choice of paint should be taken seriously.
Features of coloring materials
Most often, home craftsmen, painting on wood, use the following types of paints:
In another way, these dyes are also called posterior. They are a dense, opaque mass. It is easy to work with them, but it is impossible to create complex drawings with many shades. For drawing gouache must meet the following requirements:
- easy to apply on the surface
- do not wear off after drying, do not crack.
In order to keep the pattern drawn with gouache more firmly, water is not used for diluting the paint, but an aqueous solution of PVA glue in a ratio of 1: 1. Such dilution of paint allows you to do without a preliminary primer.
Gouache drawings are always bright, colorful, and the dye is cheap. Gouache is suitable for those who begin to master painting on wood and create their first masterpieces.
Everyone is familiar with the simple watercolor paints used by schoolchildren. Compared to gouache, they are more transparent, they allow you to create a complex pattern with many shades. In order to get a beautiful drawing, watercolor should:
- lie flat on the surface of the workpiece, without spots and stains,
- hold on firmly after drying.
The main advantage of watercolors is that if errors occur during drawing, the product can be washed, dried, primed and painted again.
Acrylic-based paints are some of the best, and painting them on wood is not only beautiful: acrylic dyes additionally protect and strengthen the material. Manufacturers of artistic paints offer a wide color palette for drawing, but it is not profitable for beginners to use them.
Why? The fact is that acrylic compositions are quite expensive, therefore, it will be unprofitable for beginner artists who have not yet fully mastered the drawing technique to use them. But those who have already achieved some experience, they can create their own masterpieces to decorate the interior.
Oil painting is recommended for those who have already mastered at least a little how to do wood painting.
The coloring matter is diluted to a working consistency with the recommended solvent (white spirit, drying oil), after which you can draw. But oil paints have the following features:
- give only bright shades (with them you can paint an item under Khokhloma or make a stylish golden pattern on a black background),
- durable, after drying, they cannot be removed.
Those who have even a little drawing experience will enjoy working with oil paints, because they can inexpensively and for a long time decorate the interior of living rooms.
Aniline-based coloring materials are increasingly found in the interior of houses, they paint wooden walls or small decorative objects, and in rural areas craftsmen decorate their houses with them. Aniline dyes have a number of positive qualities:
- They are easy to draw.
- With them you can get many beautiful shades.
- They are inexpensive.
But they quickly fade. To preserve the brightness of the picture, if it is done outdoors, it is necessary to cover it with UV-resistant varnish.
Getting ready to paint
Before applying beautiful patterns, the foundation must be prepared. To do this, follow these steps:
- to peel with a “skin”, gradually changing from a larger to a smaller base, to smoothness,
- coat the surface with a primer on wood corresponding to the paint used,
- wait for the soil to dry and apply a color base, painting the product with the desired color.
After the color base has dried, drawing on any technology is possible.
Drawing using a template is the simplest: you just need to put the stencil on the surface, circle it with a soft pencil, and you can colorize it. You can make a stencil yourself by copying any picture you like or asking to make a template of a familiar artist.
The point technique also helps to create beautiful things for those who do not have artistic skills. The point method is to draw a lot of landmarks in the sketch drawing and copy as accurately as possible from the selected sketch onto the surface to be painted.
The point method of drawing requires some skills. But maybe it’s worth recalling how, in childhood, numbers were connected by lines, and some kind of silhouette turned out? The point method of painting is based on this, and the more points are transferred, the more accurate will be the correspondence to the selected picture, which then will only be colored.
The exact way to transfer the picture to the base allows you to create artistic masterpieces for those who have almost no drawing skills. Simply copy one or more drawings with a soft pencil and colorize. It can be done as it was in the original, but it is better to show imagination and choose your own colors.
According to the sketches
This technique implies free creativity when a sketch is drawn, and then transferred to the base and painted. Sketches can be both elements of a picture (for artists), and any geometric elements (for those who do not know how to professionally draw). Using sketches, you can come up with your own unique pattern for drawing, and no matter what is used: geometric shapes, floral elements or free professional creativity.
It is recommended to varnish the finished and dried masterpiece for durability. The base of the varnish, like the base of the primer, is selected in accordance with the dye. After the varnish has dried, the painted product can be used.
Painting wooden objects is easy. Having mastered one of the proposed techniques and choosing the right paint, you can create real masterpieces by making your home or apartment interior truly unique.
1. Image translation using nail polish remover and printout
In order to transfer an image or an inscription to a wooden surface, it is necessary to prepare this very surface. It should be smooth and either unpainted or varnished. Otherwise, we risk blurring the colorful layer, which threatens us with the fact that the image will be blurred. So, we need a printout made on simple office paper on a laser printer. Keep in mind that the picture you print will look on the surface not like on a piece of paper, but as if you are looking at it in the mirror. That is, if there are inscriptions on the picture or if you definitely need to. so that the character of the picture looks in a certain direction, then you need to make a mirror printout of the image. This can be done using the Paint program. To do this, either open the picture using the Paint program, or open the Paint program and open the picture we need from it.
Suppose we have a picture
In order to transfer it in this form onto a wooden surface, we will invert it mirrored. Open the picture in the Paint program:
Then, in the menu, select the "Rotate" button and select "Flip Horizontal" in the drop-down list.
After that, the picture will look like this:
That is, we will see it as if the first picture was reflected in the mirror.
We print it and cut out the image leaving a centimeter with 2 allowances on each side. After that, we put the image down on the surface onto which we want to transfer the drawing. We take cotton wool and nail polish remover (without the oil and vitamin additives, the cheapest). We thoroughly wet the fleece and with it we press the image to the surface, while soaking it. It is necessary to press well, starting from the middle to the edges. The stronger we press, the greater the likelihood that the picture will translate qualitatively. By pressing, make sure that the image does not move. When everyone pressed. then immediately remove the piece of paper, do not wait for it to dry. The image should remain on the surface of the subject. According to this method, there is a video master class on our website.
