What it means to be a patriot is to feel patriotism, to feel love in one’s homeland and to put her interests above her own, this desire to do everything possible to preserve herself, her people and her culture, the desire to protect her interests and borders. Patriotism was not always inherent in the human community, in primitive communities there were no states, but the beginnings of patriotism appeared in the form of affection for one’s tribe, a sense of kinship and unity with its members, and self-awareness as one of them.

  • Patriotism performs various functions, it helps maintain the unity of a certain state or nation, helps protect it from external adverse factors.
  • We see especially vivid manifestations of patriotism during hostilities, where one person is only a small part of his people and his country, and he himself, feeling this, is able to go to great lengths to protect it, often sacrificing himself for the common good.
  • Patriotism is often assessed as a positive quality, it is valued and rewarded by the state and the authorities, they write about it in the literature and devote headlines to the media, but not everyone considers it useful and good.
  • What it means to be a patriot, according to Leo Tolstoy, means to experience a rude, harmful and immoral sense of patriotism, which becomes the cause of wars. And this point of view has reasons: after all, if the unity of the people is very strong, then they have a feeling of “we”, which expresses the thought “we are all alike and we need to stay together and protect each other”, while at the same time the feeling of “we “They”, which tells a person that everyone who does not belong to his people is different, they are not understandable, they are not as good as his compatriots and therefore they must be protected and their views should not be accepted. Such patriotism turns into radical and becomes nationalism, but then it becomes the cause of wars and ethnic conflicts. At the same time, patriotism here is only an initial, initially positive feeling.
  • Patriotism had a negative connotation in the Soviet Union as well, since there was no other choice for a person, he was born in the USSR and had to be a patriot devoted to his state, if he expressed any ideas that contradicted this, it was punished by the authorities.

Manifestations of patriotism

Who is a patriot and what are the manifestations of patriotic feelings? Someone considers himself as such, because he speaks exclusively in the official language and honors traditions, someone made a significant contribution to the history of the country, and someone is ill with every event in the life of the motherland.

The patriot respects and remembers the history of his country, he proudly accepts both victories and defeats, without trying to ridicule or humiliate the state.

You can experience patriotic feelings for the state in which you live, or you can feel part of it thousands of kilometers from it.

Of course, we can call patriots people who daily, investing their energy, work for the good of the country, teachers who cultivate respect for the state among children - future citizens. Patriotism manifests itself in small things and develops into one great sense of pride in the country.

To be a patriot means to believe in the future of the country, to see prospects and strive for them; it is a trembling that penetrates the whole body at the very first chords of the hymn. The patriot is ready to devote life to the Motherland, act in its interests and die for her, if necessary.

Patriotism and emigration

Often people, due to different circumstances, leave the country. Perhaps someone does this because of the reluctance to live where he was born, someone forces life, but distance can not cause the loss of patriotic feelings. When a person, living already under a different sky, is worried about his homeland, even in the little things, for example, is a fan of his sports team or is not indifferent to cultural events, it causes only respect.

It is better to educate and develop a sense of patriotism in yourself than a sense of shame and hatred, because blaming your whereabouts for failure is pointless.

If the citizens of the country are not imbued with her problems, do not worry about her fate and do not respect her, then they primarily laugh at themselves, at the history of their lives. Always life beyond the horizon seems different, new and more promising, but it is not for nothing that they say that it is good where we are not. It’s better to try to improve your native than to stare at someone else’s already created public space.

The future of the country is in the hands of its inhabitants, it is they who create its positive or negative image for other states, it is they who create its history.
