Ways to connect a Canon printer


This method consists in using the Windows Wireless Installation Wizard.

Before connecting the printer to the computer via WiFi in this way, you need to make sure that the printing equipment can be connected using the wizard.

If the MFP supports WEP and WPA encryption, pairing will succeed. Connect the device in the following sequence:

  1. In the device control menu, select "Settings" - "Network". The wizard displays a list of nearby access points.
  2. Choose our Wai Fai.
  3. Enter the network encryption password.

How to connect a wireless printer to a computer if the previous methods did not help? There is another way, but it is difficult in comparison with the previous options. In such methods, there are always nuances that can play a role in connecting devices. Most often, they relate to the factory IP address and subnet mask, which is provided by the provider.

But such a situation is unlikely, and therefore does not hurt to connect the MFP. This is due to the fact that most equipment uses not static addresses, but dynamic ones. For printing equipment of this kind, it is only necessary to add the IP address available on the device in the computer settings. How to connect the printer to a laptop without a wire in this case? Follow the steps below:

  1. We go to the control panel.
  2. Select the item "Devices and Printers" - "Installing a Printer".
  3. In the window that opens, 2 items will appear. Here you will need to select the "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer."
  4. The PC starts searching for suitable equipment automatically. When the MFP is detected, it will appear on the screen.
  5. After that, it is required to open the proposed block, where it is necessary to enter the IP, which has an MFP.

At the end of the connection procedure, a window appears informing you of successful pairing with the output device. You can start working with printing equipment immediately after rebooting the laptop.

Some easy steps

The range of Pixma printers, in particular the G3400 model, is equipped with a Wi-fi adapter that implements the Canon Pixma printer in the following modes:

  • infrastructure, that is, to a home network using a router,
  • direct connection in access point mode.

The main problem in this case is the switching between modes. The Pixma G3400 model does not have a display, so all the manipulations are performed blindly by pressing and holding the buttons on the printer.

The manufacturer recommends connecting the Canon printer to the computer precisely in the access point mode, defining this method as the easiest. The following steps must be completed:

  1. Connect the printer to a power source.
  2. Press and hold the Wi-fi button until the power-on lamp blinks.
  3. Press the black print, color print and Wi-fi buttons. The power indicator will stop blinking and will be lit continuously.
  4. Activate Wi-fi on a computer or laptop.
  5. Find the printer model in the list of displayed equipment.
  6. Enter the requested password. As a password for new printers, a serial number is entered, which can be viewed directly on the printer.

If there were no failures during the execution of the algorithm, then the connection was successful, and you can begin to work. To connect a Canon printer to a laptop, the exact same steps must be taken.

Some differences occur when setting up Wi-fi via a home network using a router. In this case, the Pixma printer must be switched to infrastructure mode.

For this:

  1. Press and hold the Wi-fi button until the power-on lamp blinks.
  2. Press the color, black print, and Wi-fi buttons in sequence. The power indicator will light steadily.

Similar to connecting via an access point, the desired printer is defined in the equipment folder and installed as the default printing device. In order to avoid confusion when which buttons to press, it is worth writing out this information and sticking it directly on the printer so that it is always at hand.

Connect using Wi-fi Protected Setup

Printers of the Pixma line support connection through a router using WPS. This method avoids entering passwords and facilitates the installation of equipment. In our case, the method is recommended for the printer model Canon MG3640. In order to use WPS, before setting up the printer, check the settings of the router and activate WPS if necessary. The router must be equipped with a WPS button.

The procedure for connecting the printer is as follows:

  1. Connect the printer to a power source.
  2. Press and hold the Wi-fi button until the power-on lamp blinks.
  3. On the router, press and hold the WPS button.
  4. When the printer and the router are connected, the indicator on the printer will light up constantly.

The procedure for finding a printer router takes several minutes, but in the future will provide uninterrupted access to the MFPs on your network.

What to do with outdated printer models?

Users are still using fairly old printer models. These models do not have the ability to connect via Wi-fi. In addition, the manufacturer does not release updates for drivers. For this reason, users are forced to replace a perfectly working, but outdated printer with a new, pumped model. How to find a solution? As an example, let's try to connect a Canon LBP 1120 printer to the Windows 7 operating system on a computer or laptop.

The manufacturer’s website officially stated that drivers for the 64-bit system are under development. If the user has a 32-bit OS installed, then there should be no problems installing the driver. You can check the capacity of the system in the menu Computer - Properties - Type of system (field Bit depth). The driver for the LBP 1120 model is downloaded from the official site and installed on a computer or laptop.

Then the printer is connected as standard:

  1. Disconnect the computer (laptop) and printer from the power supply. Connect the printer to the computer via the USB port.
  2. Turn on the printer, then the computer (laptop). After loading the operating system, the search for new equipment will begin.
  3. Search and install the driver. To do this, cancel the search for the driver on the Internet and specify the system folder (the option “Search for the driver on this computer”), where the driver was saved after downloading.
  4. After installing the driver, the printer is ready for use.

But what if the 64-bit Windows 7 operating system is installed on the computer (laptop)?

The problem has two solutions:

  1. Connect the printer to another computer or laptop that has the necessary drivers, and print the necessary documents and photos through the local network,
  2. Use a virtual machine in conjunction with the LBP 1120 printer driver for Windows XP.

Virtual machines are familiar to many advanced users. These are emulator programs that reproduce the work of various platforms without reinstalling a working operating system. Examples of such machines are VirtualBox, Windows XP Mode.

Briefly, the algorithm is as follows:

  1. Download and install the virtual machine on the computer.
  2. Find and save the Canon LBP 1120 driver for Windows XP on your computer.
  3. Start the virtual system, install the printer in it.

Setting up and working with virtual machines requires a fairly high level of competence. If the user is not confident in their abilities, you should entrust the connection of the Canon LBP1120 printer to a professional.

About printers and the essence of the problem

Contrary to the fact that there are not so many varieties of printers, about five, the technologies that they work on are improved by each company that produces them. Thus, it turns out that virtually every model is more or less unique in terms of technology of work and production.

The idea of ​​a wireless connection has long approached this area of ​​computer technology. Five years ago, it was possible to purchase a multifunction device (MFP) with support for Wi-Fi-connection. It would seem that it’s worth adding a Wi-Fi module. But it’s not so simple.

Even now, there are many different subtleties and methods of connecting a wireless printer to a gadget or computer. In fact, each model can have not only settings different from its predecessor, but also the principle of operation. Therefore, connecting the printer to a computer via Wi-Fi is not such a simple matter. But what can I say, there is a known case when a new-fangled device with Wi-Fi support could not be set up even in its own service center.

But it’s okay to connect, but setting up a printer via Wi-Fi in some cases is just super complicated, and sometimes even almost impossible. Why it is so confusing and complicating such a process, which initially should be simple and intuitive, is unknown.

Since there is no universal method, at least a few of the most common ones should be described. But even this does not guarantee that they will be at least partially useful to anyone who has purchased such a device. In any case, here we will consider the three most common connection methods, which can arbitrarily be designated as follows:

Easy way

This option is the most convenient and least expensive in terms of number of actions and time. It does not require any additional processes. Simply install the device in the right place and turn it on. Of course, the gadget should be within reach of the Wi-Fi coverage through which information will be exchanged.

After the device is connected to the power supply and turned on, you will need to start the PC. Then install the drivers from the drive accompanying the device and reboot the system. After the operating system is fully loaded, where the Wi-Fi module will automatically start, go to the "Start" menu, located in the lower left corner of the monitor screen, and in the right column of the window we find and click on the "Devices and Printers" position.

Pressing will launch a window where all connected devices will be displayed, including the one we need. Finding it will not be difficult, since the manufacturer and model will be displayed in its name.

Just right-click on it to bring up the context menu, and select the second item from the top with the name “Use by default”.

If everything was done correctly, then a round green icon with a white check mark will be displayed on the device’s icon.

In principle, everything - the gadget is ready to use. But before printing any documents on the printer via Wi-Fi, it is recommended that you print a test page.

Devices with this type of connection have one very significant drawback, namely, if you forget to turn off the device after use, an unscrupulous neighbor or colleague will be able to connect to it and send a couple of unnecessary files to the printout. Therefore, it is advisable to turn off the device upon completion of work.

Reasonable approach

In execution, this method is practically no different from the previous one, with the exception of some nuances. Immediately after installing the drivers and utilities from the printer, you will need to go into the settings of the device itself and select the network to which it will be connected.

This is done very simply. It takes only a little patience and attentiveness. In principle, everything will be about the same as when adding any other device to an existing Wi-Fi network.

First we find the desired network, and then enter the encryption key. It seems like a trifle, but convenience grows at times. In fact, you succeeded in such a thing as making the printer network via Wi-Fi. And this allows almost any Wi-Fi device connected to this access point to directly send files for printing, without the intervention of a personal computer or laptop.

In addition, the devices mated according to such a scheme are completely devoid of the disadvantage of the previous method, and the level of ease of use becomes simply prohibitive.

Redundant way

The last option we are considering, how to connect a laptop to a printer via Wi-Fi, is the most difficult relative to the previous two.

In such pairing schemes, there are nuances that can play a role, or may even be left overboard. The fact is that it may happen that the device will work from the start and will not have to perform any special actions and manipulations. This course of events is possible only if the stock IP-address of the device will be within the same subnet with the used provider and dedicated client.

Simply put, this is unlikely, especially since currently most of them are used not static IPs, but dynamic ones.

For devices with a similar connection scheme, you will need to add the IP address that the printer uses to the PC settings.

You will need to go back to "Devices and Printers" and click on the "Add Printer" button.

Two blocks will be presented in the displayed window, of which we need the lower one, which has the signature “Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer”.

A refreshed window will begin an automatic search. When the printer is found, it will be displayed in the main part of the window.

Double-click on it, and a small window will appear here, where you will need to enter the IP address specified in the instructions of the purchased device. When we finish entering the data, a notification about the successful connection of the device will appear. By restarting the computer, it will be possible to start printing the necessary documents.
