This post introduces the current table tennis rules in brief. They are suitable for training students and beginner players, as well as fragments of this material can be used for abstract.
Accessibility and ease have made table tennis one of the most popular sports in the world today. The game is not only easy to learn, but also extremely exciting, it does not require large financial investments in the equipment of players and equipment. All that is needed for ping-pong is a table, net, racket and ball, and, of course, the desire of the student himself.
As with all sports, table tennis has rules that must be respected, whether it is a friendly match at the amateur level or a match in a professional tournament. The table tennis rules are established by the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) - the organization is the main regulatory body of this sport.
An interesting historical fact. Table tennis originated in England at the end of the 19th century. In 1988, the game was included in the program of the Olympic Games. The most popular ping-pong has in Asia (China, Japan, South Korea).
What is the essence of table tennis?
Two people are participating in this dynamic sport (there are also 2 vs 2 doubles). The action takes place on a tennis table painted in dark green or dark blue, which should have the following dimensions:
- Length - 2.74 m.
- Width - 1.52 m.
- Height - 76 cm from the floor.
Strictly in the middle of the table (in width) a grid is stretched, the upper edge of which should not be higher than 15.25 cm from the playing surface. The grid is attached to vertical posts on each side (rack height 15.25 cm). The bottom of the grid should be as close to the playing plane as possible, and its ends also attached to the support posts.
For playing tennis, a ball with a diameter of 40 millimeters and a weight of 2.7 grams is used. The ball should be made of celluloid or similar plastic. The color allowed to use an orange or white ball.
Do you know? Top-quality table tennis balls from a Japanese manufacturer cost about $ 2 apiece.
And now it remains to talk about the racket. It can be of any size, shape or weight, but its impact surface must be flat and rigid and consist of 85% natural wood. There should be rubber pads on both sides of the racket: one side is painted black, the other is bright red. Before the start of the match, the tennis player must allow his opponent and referee to inspect the racket that he will play.
We have equipment and inventory, but how to play? It's pretty simple. Tennis players stand opposite each other at the table, lots are drawn (who should first serve), then the game begins. The server must throw the ball vertically and then hit it with a racket so that it first hits on its half of the table, and then on the opponent's half of the table. If the ball touches the net after serving, a resupply is performed. The essence of the game is to keep the ball in the air as long as possible, forcing the opponent to make a mistake first, thereby putting a point in his piggy bank.
Table Tennis Filing Rules:
- Before serving, the ball should be in the open palm.
- The ball is thrown vertically, at least 16 cm in height (hand feed is prohibited by the rules).
- It is forbidden to throw the ball over the area of the table, as well as from under the table.
- After the ball is thrown, the server must remove the hand in which it was round. Such a rule is established so that the receiver can clearly see the ball.
Players take turns serving two innings.
Important clarification! In badminton and tennis, the pitch must be diagonal, but in single table tennis matches the ball can be sent in any direction. As for the paired table tennis games, here the serve should be performed diagonally from your right side of the table to the right side of the opponent's table.
How many games are there in table tennis? Account rule
The number of sets in table tennis depends on the level of competition (the number of games can only be odd). If it is, for example, school competitions or city competitions, then the number of parties can be 3 or 5. At the professional level, 7 sets are played as a standard. To win a match, you need to win more games than your opponent.
A ping-pong game lasts until one of the players scores 11 points. If the score is 10-10, then in this case the game continues until there is a difference of 2 points.
As for the question about the duration of the set in ping-pong, there is no definite answer to this. No time limits are set per game; it is played until victory.
From the above material, it can be understood that the rules of table tennis are not difficult to learn compared to other sports, for example, hockey, football or basketball. If you still could not figure out some points, see the additional information on the topic in the video below.
Ping-pong is an ideal sport that has a lot of advantages. It develops a reaction, gives a good charge to the musculoskeletal system, and during intense training and competitions trains the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Also, to play table tennis you do not need to spend a lot of money on equipment and inventory. A racket and a ball cost a little, and as for clothes for the game, you can use a regular tracksuit and sneakers or other convenient things and shoes.
Where to play ping pong? There are also plenty of options. Many organizations set up tables somewhere in corridors or separate rooms so that employees can relax and exercise for the body. Each sports complex or gym has a ping-pong table, and this once again confirms the fact that the game is very popular and accessible.
Video training "Table Tennis - Serving (Tutorial)"
Part 1. Feed with lower rotation (explanation)
Part 2. Short pruning
Part 3. Exercise for Defenders
Experienced tennis players know that the training process of serving techniques must be given considerable time, because the filing cannot be carried out "as it turns out." The right tactics are the main way to victory. The technical skill of a player in table tennis is determined by the cleanliness of the punches, cuts and innings.
It should be remembered that there are three types of serve with the bottom rotation of the ball: leaving to the right, left and back. Their effectiveness is determined by the position of the ball relative to the net: the lower and closer the feed is directed, the more effective it is. The goal of innings left or right is to encourage the opponent to make a mistake when he chooses the direction of the retaliatory strike.
For example, if you undercut and how to pull the racket towards yourself, then the ball will move to the left corner of the table with a lower rotation. With a sawing contact in a straight ball will return. These are just two of the many existing techniques used in table tennis innings. In more detail about the types of innings will tell the proposed video.
Table tennis is an excellent way not only to relax, but also to improve your health. After all, table tennis has a beneficial effect on the muscles of the arms and back, strengthens the heart and improves the speed of reaction. And also this is an excellent occupation, which everyone can do, regardless of age and physical fitness.
Table Tennis Rules
Controversial moment №1
Many disputes erupt due to the fact that one amateur assures another that he serves not within the official rules of table tennis. The feed has several points that should be strictly observed.
Table Tennis Rules:
I add that during a toss, the palm cannot be above the table - this is a violation of the rules.
Also, you can not toss out from under the table - this is punishable by the judge. In such a situation, he assigns a point to an opponent.
That is, you can make a remark to your opponent, if he
- Tossed the ball less than 16 cm
- Started tossing over table surface
- Threw out from under the table
- Throws too much. That is, the ball flies not vertically during a throw. Although here you don’t cross the border, you can throw the ball at yourself, but so that it is not too strong.
This as regards table tennis rules regarding tossing.
By the way, I tell all these moments in a video tutorial. If you’re more used to getting information from a video, then this is the same lesson. Viewing will take you only 12 minutes.
If you liked the video, then you can watch a special series of lessons on the technique of the game for fans, which is inaccessible to prying eyes.
Errors can also occur when touching the ball.
From these dry words we can deduce the following:
- You can not throw it on the table and serve over the table (contact of the racket and ball above the surface). This is a gross violation.
- It is impossible to cover the moment of contact between the racket and the ball with your free hand - the instant award of a point to the opponent. But this is in case the match is judged by a professional referee. If you are playing a match with an amateur colleague, first make a warning and offer to play by the rules.
- Well, for the most beginners. When serving, the ball must first hit your half, and then the opponent's half.
These are the main points in the “Feeds” section that you should know.
Double Tennis Rules
Controversial moment №2
Imagine that when you hit the ball, it touched both the index finger and the lining. That is, a double touch turned out. Naturally, he flew away from you very uncomfortable and the opponent will make a mistake with a probability of 80-90%. Who is awarded such a point?
About 30 years ago, such a touch was considered correct. Then this rule was canceled and if the “round” touched the finger, then the point was immediately considered lost.
What does a long serve in table tennis mean?
One of the most unique skills that you can develop in table tennis is the ability to serve the ball long (in other words - “deep”). Typically, novice players think that the main thing is to learn how to do the top spin correctly, and long feeds are usually underestimated. But skillful execution of this pitch can significantly raise the level of the game.
Consider the "mechanics" of long innings. To do this, we conditionally divide the table into quadrants (sectors). Sector 1 is for short feed, sector 2 is for medium and sector 3 is for long feed. Sector 4 - is located behind the side line of the table.
So, sectors of the same color are goals. Goal 1 - touch the ball in its half and goal 2 - on the side of the opponent. When serving, you must hit the ball in sectors of the same color. This makes it more likely that the opponent will make an unforced error at the reception.
The ball must be served strong enough to land in sector 3 on the opponent's field. The main advantage of this submission is that your opponent will have less time to prepare and conduct the attack. The ball flies to the edge of the table and making a U-turn and a full swing for a hit is quite problematic. And long serving is especially effective when the receiver is close to the table. The video below shows how to properly apply deep feeds in a workout. After confident mastery, this element of table tennis will bring you the maximum benefit in the competition.
Long serve and tactical schemes
An unexpected long serve can take the enemy by surprise. But, in order to finally win the point, you need to apply some tactical schemes. These combinations, like the feeds themselves, need to be worked out in training. In the video below, some scenarios are presented after the opponent takes a deep feed. This will help you create your own tactical approaches to the ball.
If you are not going to feed a long feed diagonally, you can feed in a straight line, closer to the white side line. You still need to try to file from sector 3 on your side to the same sector on the opposite side of the table, as shown in the picture below. Analyze this moment.
When doing this serving option, the main attention should be paid to the point of the first rebound of the ball on your side. It depends on where the ball will bounce on the opponent’s side. In the video below, the bounce points of the ball on your half of the table and on the opposite are clearly visible. These points are in sector 3.
Winning a point with a serve - ACE
Of course, the best option would be to win a point immediately upon serving. For example, you saw that the opponent is preparing to shift to the left in order to take the feed with a hit (top spin) to the right. By submitting a fast long feed in a straight line, you can immediately win a point.
If you fail to win the ball right away and the opponent nevertheless accepts the serve, then all the same you caught him by surprise and his reception will obviously be uncertain. Your task is to win a point by two, three next strokes. See how this is done in the video below.
Now, after several of your innings, deep left and right, you will see that the opponent, when accepting the innings, began to take up a position in the middle of the table. He expects from you an unexpected long feed to the edges of the table: either to the left or in a straight line. Accordingly, he makes a decision and now tries to take such a stance in order to be able to respond to deep feeds in time. This is exactly what you need. Now you need to apply a quick deep feed to the right side of the opponent’s abdomen.
A long feed going to the center of the table disorientes any player because he does not expect it. He is set up to receive long innings aimed at the corners of the table. The video shows how you can catch the enemy using this scheme. Please note that the opponent is unable to perform a quality shot. He is caught by surprise, he is very uncomfortable.
Here's another example of how to catch a player who has moved forward to receive a short feed. The player had already decided to move forward, and the pitch was served deeply and quickly in the center of the table. This is clearly visible when watching a movie in slow motion.
The next moment. Now you see how the enemy is preparing to receive a feed from the middle of the table, and the feed is again directed deep to the right. The player makes a mistake ....
The player returned to the deep feed option on the right, but the feed direction was again changed to the center of the table. In the course of receiving the serve, the player decided to play the ball on the left, but at the same time left the entire playing space unprotected on the left. And got a point loss.
The following situation. The player is ready to actively accept any deeply directed feed. But in return he gets a serve that just flies over the edge of the table. He is forced to gently play this ball and gets a tough attack.
Learn to serve spicy and unexpected
As you can see, using deep innings is a complex game system. It is important to understand how to serve, to observe how your serve affects the course of the game. It is necessary to constantly analyze and look for moments to change the feed in order to maintain a dominant position. In addition, you must have at the disposal of several worked out schemes for drawing the ball after serving. Feeding is something you can work to perfection. When performing this element of table tennis, no one bothers you and you are independent of the actions of the enemy.
Review the material you read again. Take time and perfect your deep feeds. Learn to serve sharply and unexpectedly in various places and you will have another powerful lever of pressure on any opponent. Without a doubt, this will improve your performance in competitions.
